Industrial Biotechnology

The course is designed to introduce students to bio-based products and processes: advancing sustainable, cost- and eco-efficient production of chemicals, materials, consumer goods, and alternative energy.

SECTION 1: Bioenergy and Biofuels: Bioenergy- Introduction, industrial and economic significance. Case studies on biomass, biogas and biofuel production

SECTION 2: Food and Beverage Processing: Set of common methods and techniques used in industry to transform raw ingredients into food and beverages for human consumption.

SECTION 3: Marine Biotechnology and Bioprospecting:New and improved products from the seas- Pharmaceuticals, Enzymes, Biomolecular Materials, Biomonitors , Biopesticides .New and improved processes from the seas—Bioremediation and Bioprocessing

The course will also cover most commonly used fermentation, molecular biology and cell culture techniques in biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries.

Drug Discovery

The course provides a broad overview of the drug discovery and development process. The course mainly concentrates on modern platforms for drug discovery and methods of drug synthesis such as :

SECTION 1: Anticancer Drug Discovery

SECTION 2: Combinatorial Chemistry

SECTION 3: Genomics and Proteomics in Drug Discovery and Development

SECTION 4: Drug Targets in Central Nervous System

SECTION 5: Natural Bioactive Products from Microbes and Medicinal Plants.

The course will end with a brief introduction to molecular modelling, computer-aided drug design, and various analytical techniques used in drug discovery.

The aim of this course is to introduce students to the technological developments , developed by the collaboration of different scientific disciplines with Biology. Topics covered in this module include:

SECTION 1: Stem cell research and future prospects Subtopics: Properties of stem cells, Embryonic stem cells , Adult stem cells, Potential uses of human stem cells and obstacles.

SECTION 2: Nanobiotechnology : Nanotechnology- background Nanosensors based on biomolecules Nanoparticles for gene delivery.

SECTION 3: Cybernetics: Background of cybernetics theory Cybernetics in biology including bioengineering, biocybernetics, bionics, medical cybernetics and synthetic biology .

SECTION 4: Systems biology Systems biology- background Systems biology in transcriptomics, proteomics, metabolimics, fluxomics.
